Sukosd Bethlen Castle
Racos, Brasov, Romania
Photographed in May 2010
Built in 1625
Home for the Sukosd noble family
Built in in the Transylvanian Renaissance style, being of small scale
The castle from Racos was the residence of count Sukosd
He received the field from Gabriel Bethlen, as a reward for the military service performed
The buildings, among which we add a square yard, are surrounded by walls
The castle has circular towers and the entrance tower has a square plan
An inscription of 1700 shows that in that year the building belonged to Count Stefan Bethlen
On the vault of a room is depicted the coat of arms of the Bethlen family, carved in stone
The castle had a second string of walls, thicker, located in the east, south and the west side
Connected to this castle is an episode from the life of a Romanian ruler's familly...
... during the war between Turks and Austrians from 1664
... when Grigore Ghica Voda was on the Austrians side
After 1873, the castle entered in the possession of Count Samuel Teleki
In the days of the bourgeois-democratic revolution of 1848-1849, the castle was mostly burned
Today the Castle is being restored
